[Berlin Bughouse Open Tournament 2002]
The "official" invitation in .pdf - Format (and in german) is here. The ruleset for this event (in english) is here. The format of the first round was a nine round double swiss system, giving each team 18 games. A table of the first rounds' results, teams with their FICS handles:
The marked top eight teams proceeded to the A Final after a short break, while DonToemmel and JanoStar voluntarily (and spontaneously) organized the B Final for those teams which had not had enough bughouse yet. *=no known fics handle The results of the first round of the final, which was a "best of four" elimination with decisive fifth game if neccessary:
There are video captures of most of these final games available. Please notice that due to the compression, they got a bit dark. Its best to download them and view them locally, maximized to full screen. Here are parts of the game steeg+haribo(on the left, front to back) vs. fermy+CreepingDeath. Here you see Meijster+Kesha (left) vs. Fock+Venomous. Another small part of that game and then a scene from Nabla(eating)+Tjeulesbetes(left) vs. wortel+Cranith. Same game another scene here. Next round, semi finals - and the results:
The Game for 3rd place between venomous+fock vs. Tjeulesbetes+nabla was a tense fight as there was an attractive prize for the third. The result was as close as possible; this was actually the only match where a fifth game was neccessary. In the end it was venomous+fock taking the win with 3-2; here is the video of that battle. The Final, played between MarcusM.+Ishamael and CreepingDeath+fermy was over after the third game, all won by the winning Australian/Ukrainian combination. As they are all good sportsmen they played out the 4th game too, which was won by the Dutch/German team. See it en Detail here. The prize for the youngest team went to Schilling+Michaelis; ![]() The best Berlin team was RalfiZoller+HocusPocus. Unfortunately i have no picture available. The team that earned the prize for the greatest distance to reach the tournament location was also - australian CreepingDeath with ukrainian fermy, who came from California. The results of the "unofficial" B Finale, with a "thank you" to DonToemmel and JanoStar:
TD's notes: despite rather lengthly discussions in the beginning while explaining the rules to the crowd, the tournament went rather smoothly with only two serious problems; one in the game dagger+SkaCZ vs. DonToemmel+JanoStar where it came to debates about the personal playing style of one player (while thinking he did play with the pieces in hand, which was interpreted as hiding), the other in the quarter final between Nabla+Tjeulesbetes and Cranith+wortel, where one team meant to claim flag but failed to stop the clocks so i could not verify it. Biggest surprise were surely Haribo+steeg who managed to make the finals and outqualified teams with way higher ratings on their first OTB event. Despite the lack of experience Haribo was also one of the fastest movers as you can see on the video. Another team that managed to surprise was the spontaneous MarcusM.+Ishamael one; MarcusM., who originally meant to partner FireFly, was left without a partner in the dawn of the the tournament day as FireFly was kept from taking part by work. Ishamael who seemed to have a bad hangover was also "solo" so they decided to try together. They beat the upcoming winners in the first round when they played each other, and managed to make the finals. The beginning of the tournament was heavily delayed - first by a cleaning lady who wasnt informed about the event and declined to let us in, later by several participants who celebrated a bit too long the evening before (of course, the dutch guys were amongst them) and who we had to wake up individually. The quarter finals being heavily delayed by Nabla who took a long break to get himself some food. It was the clash of cultures that lead to a misunderstanding; i said "We have a short break" meaning 10 min cig break (cigarette and coke are the regular breakfast of Berliners) while the french soul of Nabla interpreted that as a call for croissants and cafe au lait :) While i was walking around and looking important the actual work was silently done in the background by a guy called Sven Jorgens, who came up with the whole tournament organization, a software to define the ss pairings, paper forms to report the game results, a beamer and so on and on...basically, Sven made the whole thing look like a professional tournament, and i forgot to say "Thanks a lot Sven! :)" Prizes - there were rather impressive prizes to win for a bughouse tournament. Those were donated by Ralf Zöller (a.k.a. RalfiZoller). Thanks for the manpower, enthusiasm and support! The first donator however was FireFly. Remember that bughouse tournament that foxbat had run to celebrate 10 years FICS? FF won it and the prize was 100 US $, which he immediately donated to the gathering and the tournament. Thanks a lot for that, FireFly; its such a shame you didnt even get to fight to win your own money back :) Chess clocks were provided by Schach-Niggemann. We had 50 DGT clocks which proved to be solid and reliable and we were allowed to sell them after the event with a 25% prize reduction. A lot of people bought themselves one or two clocks. |
